How do i switch Blogger to a Custom Domain - Blogspot to Dot Com

I am very happy to say that i have got for myself a domain name and i have decided to use my own name this time and i am looking forward to using this domain name in the future for as long as i live. I have taken up this domain name for 5 years now with Godaddy who has one of the cheapest domain registrar available.

Firstly you got to decide a domain name and of course deciding a name is pretty hard and unless you are going to use your name to be your domain otherwise it is best that you use a program that can decide the keywords you want to search for a list of domain name available for you. You can use bust a name domain master for free which allows you to type keywords and they will search for you the available domain which is close to your keywords.

Using Bust A Name to find your domain
After you have found your domain name, there is a 'buy button' and get your Godaddy Account for $6.95 only instead of the normal price of $8.95 per domain name.

Congrats on getting a domain, now to configure
After you have made the purchase of the domain using either creditcard or Paypal, We need to configure your settings so that your blogspot can accept the custom dot com name. Login to your account with your customer ID and Password which you have given yourself.
Look for "manage domain" and click on it then you see your domain name, click on it again so that it can bring you to the the Domain panel.

godaddy start page

Domain Control Center
Under your domain panel, Click on "Total DNS Control and MX Records" so that you can configure your DNS number.

go daddy control panel
DNS Control Panel
When you are in the DNS Control panel, you will see the first 2 columns which are important, cause a change in it can affect how your blogspot is going to be shown with your dot com.

godaddy dns control panel

A Host
You can see that your Control panel will be slightly different from me, i have an additional "blog" column which i have added it and i will tell you why later i add this, but you can just have it added in in small letters "blog" within and change the ip address to what your "@" shows, please note that there might be changes to the IP address after one day of configuring your domain name, so don't panic, for any doubt or you would like to know your own Ip address, you can always contact their Technical support team, they are most willing to help and reply you through phone or email.(*The IP address shown may not be suitable for you so contacting the staff is the best solution to know your own IP)

C Names
If you can see under the first column, i have the host pointed to "ghs.google.com" instead of the old setting of www, please do the following changes to tell them that you want to direct it to blogspot. That is it for this crucial portion, now we will move on to setting your

Domain Forwarding
Go back to your Domain Control Center and chose the tab "Forward" and over at the Domain Forwarding page you will be able to bring your blogspot name over to your dot com!

Godaddy chosing domain forward
Three portion in forwarding that you need to do before your dot com can take effect.

  1. You need to "enable" the forwarding

  2. You need to key in your blogspot name, example like mine
  3. Redirect to "301 permanently" and save.
Take note that they will process this forwarding and it can take 24 hours to get it done, so in the mean time you will still have to stick to your blogspot account.

godaddy domain forwarding

What's the difference between a 301 Redirect and a 302 Redirect?

301 Redirect
Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a "301 Moved Permanently" HTTP response. The HTTP 301 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has permanently moved.

302 Redirect
Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a "302 Moved Temporarily" HTTP response. The HTTP 302 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has temporarily moved.

If I use a 301 redirect on my site to point the www and non-www versions to the same version, do I still need to use this feature?
You don't have to use it, as we can follow the redirects. However, you still can benefit from using this feature in two ways: we can more easily consolidate links to your site and over time, we'll direct our crawl to the preferred version of your pages.

If I use this feature, should I still use a 301 redirect on my site?
You don't need to use it for Googlebot, but you should still use the 301 redirect, if it's available. This will help visitors and other search engines. Of course, make sure that you point to the same URL with the preferred domain feature and the 301 redirect.

Check back your Godaddy account
You have waited for one long day and now it is the time to go back to your Godaddy account and check whether are they still processing your domain forwarding, if they are do contact their staff, it should not take that long.

Do you still remember i said to check on your IP address under the A host, go back there and see whether there is any change, if there is a change at the "@", please do so for your "blog" as well. The "@" and "blog" should have the exact configuration for the IP.

Blogger to Dot Com in an Instead!
Go to your Blogger "settings" ---> "Publishing" ---> "Custom Domain" and add your full domain name within (http://www.example.com).

blogger switch domain

I just realise that Blogger are also offering domain to their users through Google, I did not know until i purchase Godaddy, and i still prefer them. After you have switched over to your dot com. It is time to test!

You have your Own Dot com!
Yes you will see that you have your very own http://www.example.com and remember i was telling you to insert under your godaddy account Ahost "blog", this is to allow your blogspot to be read in either "https://etienneteo.com" or to be "https://etienneteo.com", you can click to try, both with be redirected to as www and it will not give a 404 not found page for https://etienneteo.com.

Lost and need help to get your Blogger blogspot to a dot com, you can always contact me and i will help you answer your questions or simply leave me a comment and i will reply!
Good luck to all!

PS:I took 30 minutes to do this post after i have set my domain name!

Hi Etienne. Your name was mentioned when I was discussing with Charles Lau about TNX.

And I found this great post. I've just bought a domain name for myself and thought o hosting it with Blogger. The main reason for hosting with Blogger is that I don't wanna lose my loyal readers and PR4 blog.

A question: Should I host my domain name somewhere else beside Blogger, will I lose all my posts and contents? Like I said, I would like to bring it all along with me to a new home.

Hope to hear from you soon. And I would like to thanks you in advance.

~

Etienne

Hi arman,

If you are using your sub domain name with a PR4 then using your new domain name will force your blog to turn PR0 on your new domain name.

Thought on a sub domain it is PR4, i suggest you stick to your sub domain if you mind the PR status.otherwise rebuild it with your new domain name.

I'm sorry but I'm a bit confused here. Okay, let's start from the top. I've a blog with blogger, say

Then I went to GoDaddy and bought myself a new domain name something like http:www.usefulinfo.com/

Like you, I wanna host it with blogger for the said reasons.

I was thought to believe that all contents in Web Directory (posts, comments etc etc) can be transfered to the new domain name, UsefulInfo.

Now, after transferring all Web Directory's contents to UsefulInfo, as you said UsefulInfo will not retain Web Directory PR. Is that correct?

What should I do to retain that PR?

After reading your reply again and again, I think I got your meaning. Correct me if I'm wrong?

If I mind it so much about PR, then I should leave Web Directory as it is.

With my new domain name, I created a new blog and start again from scratch. Is that it?

So, what you're telling me is that there is no way I can retain PR4 even though all contents are transfered to new domain name?

Sorry for the long comments, but please bear it with me. I just want to understand the situation correctly.

That's it for now. Hope to hear from you soon.

Etienne

http://web-directory.blogspot.com/ -PR4

http://www.usefulinfo.com/ -PR0

When you overlap a domain name on your sub domain, it will change all your directory domain name to usefulinfo.com.Thus your PR status will be zero again.

Your host and your content post will remain but your sub domain will now be the new domain name you chose.

Thanks Entienne. Now I do understand. Thanks for your patience explaining things to me.

I would like to thank you again for the offer. I shall email you whenever I found myself in a fix, creating a new blog with my new domain name.

It's okay, I know I can do it again as you can read in this opening chapter of this post.

Etienne

No problem, it's my pleasure explaining it to you so that you understand.

Hi,
Thank you for your tip.
I switched from blogger to a custom domain recently like you described and I struggled a little to make the www. and non-www. work at the same time.
I think the A (host) was the cause for it not working properly. I deleted the A (host) and it instantly started to work like it should.
Just though I must mention this...

Thanks again, Victor

Hi Tracy,

i think you have missed out this part.

"A Host
You can see that your Control panel will be slightly different from me, i have an additional "blog" column which i have added it and i will tell you why later i add this, but you can just have it added in in small letters "blog" within and change the ip address to what your "@" shows, please note that there might be changes to the IP address after one day of configuring your domain name, so don't panic, for any doubt or you would like to know your own Ip address, you can always contact their Technical support team, they are most willing to help and reply you through phone or email."

You need to add the blog in small to have your ip forwarded. If it still does not work, the friendly staff in godaddy can help you.Let me know again. Cheers!

So the PR really drops? How about Alexa? What other things would go down together with changing the domain name?

Thank you.

Hi. I have another question. Just very general,

Is it worth it to have a new domain? Will it take long to regain your old PR again?

Hi Etienne,

Great instructions you've got here for making this important change. I just discovered your blog and will be checking back with you often.I just switched my blogspot to custom domain and it took me just 20 minutes. One question: Since I have a non-static IP address, will the IP address I went ahead and put in the new Ahost category called "blog" (as you instructed above, lead to an error message for my readers?

Thanks a heap.
Lydia

Hola Mr. Teo,

I'm back, with new problem unfortunately.

I've succeeded transferring to http://myjourneytorecovery.net/ and it published ok with or without the w w w.

But then my template is in a mess. All headers on both sidebars are missing. Then there's empty spaces where it not suppose to be.

A box with blue background colour above both sidebars has lost it colur and both RSS links for comments and entries are missing. Ironically, both links are available and alive when I'm in 'Edit Layout' mode.

Is it the norm when publishing Blog*Spot to a custom domain name, your template will be in a mess like mine?

Or am I missing something here?

Any ideas, Mr. Teo?

A belated blessed Christmas to you and you loved ones. And Happy New Year too.

Greetings and lots of love from Malaysia.

p/s Oh yeah, I'm hosting my blog with Blogger/Google.

hi nice post! don't know how you figured out about adding the "blog" A(host) thing. I don't even have any clue about it. Btw, i have done the domain forwarding a bit different way from yours. Simply forward the non-www domain name (gudangtrailer.com) to the www domain name (http://www.gudangtrailer.com/) works for me. So no need to forward it to your blogspot address and add the "blog" A(host) DNS record I think. And I bought my domain name from godaddy too, and I'm luvin it :D
